Mission and Vision

Vision
The Baltimore Art + Justice Project will improve the lives of Baltimore residents by strengthening art and design-based advocacy and intervention.

Mission
The Baltimore Art + Justice Project is dedicated to laying the foundation for advocacy and collaboration, between and among local artists and designers, arts organizations, community-based organizations, advocates, and funders working to promote social justice in Baltimore.

Strategy
The Baltimore Art + Justice Project will facilitate dialogue and data collection that enables the city of Baltimore to identify and better understand its art and design based social justice assets. The project will create a web-based mapping resource for use by artists, designers, arts organizations, community-based organizations, advocates, and funders who are interested in advancing social justice in Baltimore.

Program Design
The mission of the Baltimore Art + Justice Project will be achieved through four program components: 1) Community Dialogue and Outreach; 2) Data Collection and Analysis; 3) Visualization and Storytelling; and 4) Documentation and Process Evaluation.

  1. Community meetings, in-depth interviews, town hall events and forums will be used to promote the project and strengthen collaboration among artists, designers, arts organizations, community-based organizations, advocates, and funders.
  2. The Baltimore Art + Justice Project profile tool will collect data on artists, designers, arts organizations, community-based organizations, and advocates in Baltimore.
  3. Data collected will be mapped by zip code and neighborhood, providing a view of Baltimore’s art and design based social justice assets.  Additionally, artists and organizations will be able to make their personal case for art as a tool for social change through digital storytelling and sharing resources.
  4. The Baltimore Art + Justice Project will use documentation and process evaluation to develop a replicable model for mapping art and design-based social justice assets in other cities.

The activities of the Baltimore Art+ Justice Project are governed by an Advisory Committee made up artists, advocates, funders and researchers.

The Baltimore Art + Justice Project is administered by MICA’s Office of Community Engagement in partnership with Animating Democracy. The project is made possible by a grant from the Open Society Foundations in New York City.

How wonderful! I work as a social worker in India and needless to say there are many in India who do not have a social voice… like the street sweepers who only come out after dark and start work at midnight … Indeed I could say that also of anywhere I have worked even in Australia the least powerful people in society lack a meaningful voice … art is the perfect way to claim back public spaces and to develop ones social voice, to engage in conversation with those more powerful in a public/social forum. Inspiring work … just wish I had some money to follow this up in India … my other life was as a community artist…. thanks for the inspiration
